Independent research at the convergence of intelligence and engineering.
Aethermark Systems LLC is an independent research, software, security, and engineering venture founded by Timothy Winans in Maryland.
What we are building
Aethermark develops technical systems for investigating complex problems across offensive cybersecurity, scientific computing, software engineering, astrophysics, and Linux infrastructure.
Our current research focuses on the development of open-source, Linux-native, Python-based architectures for human-directed, AI-assisted offensive security testing.
This work explores how large language models, specialized local models, deterministic security tools, structured evidence systems, and human technical judgment can operate together as a collaborative investigative environment.
Why these fields belong together
Scientific research and offensive-security research share a common intellectual structure. Both begin with incomplete information. Both require careful observation, hypothesis generation, experimental testing, evidence preservation, and disciplined rejection of unsupported conclusions.
Aethermark applies that common method across systems that range from astrophysical models and scientific data pipelines to Linux infrastructure, software vulnerabilities, and AI-assisted technical investigations.
Technical philosophy
- Prefer inspectable systems over opaque black boxes.
- Treat AI output as analysis to be tested, not truth to be accepted.
- Preserve commands, evidence, assumptions, and failed approaches.
- Build reproducible Linux and Python workflows.
- Use open-source components wherever practical.
- Keep authorization and consequential decisions under direct human control.
- Communicate findings clearly and responsibly.
Authorized real-world research
Aethermark evaluates its security methods through controlled laboratories, Capture the Flag competitions, open-source software analysis, and established bug bounty and vulnerability disclosure programs.
This research has included authorized testing involving systems operated by major organizations in financial technology, retail, software, and telecommunications. Organization names and technical details are withheld unless public disclosure is expressly permitted.
Mission
Our mission is to develop open technical systems that help people investigate complex software and scientific problems more effectively, without surrendering judgment, accountability, or validation to automation.
